Mochilero Kitchen, a local family-owned restaurant specializing in authentic Mexican cuisine, is set to open their doors in North Scottsdale this summer. The second Mochilero Kitchen–which joins a Peoria outpost–is located at Scottsdale Horizon Shopping Center off Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Thompson Peak Parkway.
The driving force behind Mochilero Kitchen is the brother-and-sister duo, Jorge Cota and Meliza Miranda. The inspiration for the restaurant stemmed from Cota’s research trip to Mexico in 2019. During this trip, he traveled to 23 out of the 32 states immersing himself in authentic local cuisine. Throughout his travels, Cota met with families and chefs, explored markets and was welcomed into the homes of the locals living in villages and coastal towns. “We went with the mission to get inspired so we could take the most popular and traditional dishes you find in those coastal towns and bring them home,” says Cota, in a press release. “Here we’re able to put our own twist on the dishes and really create something special.”
Miranda takes pride in Mochilero Kitchen’s extensive selection of liquor, including over 30 different types of tequila and mezcals, along with other fine wines and spirits. With an extensive culinary background, Cota has worked as a chef at the most prestigious hotels, including The Ritz-Carlton, The Phoenician and JW Marriott.
Mochilero is run like a scratch kitchen, meaning everything is made to order, using the finest fresh ingredients. One of the highlights on Mochilero Kitchen’s menu is its array of tacos, including their vegetarian mushroom taco and their mouthwatering mariscos, a raw seafood dish cooked in lime juice. Miranda describes these dishes as the epitome of authentic and savory dishes from different regions in Mexico.
