Restaurant of the Week: SugarJam The Southern Kitchen

There’s classic Southern fare, and then there’s the spiritual, ingredient-driven cuisine from SugarJam that’s as much an ode to authentic brunch staples, as it is a fun reintroduction to what authentic comfort food can (and should) taste like.

Founded by Dana Dumas and based in Scottsdale, SugarJam adds a new flair to all of your go-to Southern favorites—with a brunch, lunch and bakery menu that’s been thoughtfully crafted by Damas and her charismatic team.

SugarJam brings its cozy, comfort food to life through —you guessed it—an even cozier environment. With brick walls adorned by quirky signage, elegant chandeliers and TVs perched all across the space, the brunch space is equal parts charming and personable.

Upbeat tunes fill the restaurant with a spirited energy that’s from traditional for a conventional brunch eatery—and is such a welcomed addition, especially when paired with SugarJam’s wide array of bold, specialty dishes.

On the menu, visitors will find it all: Savory Waffle ‘N Country Fried Chicken Breast, Parisian French Toast Breakfast—featuring Grand Marnier-marinated challah bread served with rum pecan maple syrup and vanilla butter that’s so decadent and affective—and even a Salmon Croquettes and Southern Grits dish—complete with salmon croquettes drizzled with chipotle remoulade and served with creamy Southern grits.

The food, as excellent as it is, is elevated only by bar offerings—which includes a ripe honey and apricot-infused Black Girl Magic Riesling, Spicy ‘N Fruity Iced Tea (with all the makings of a go-to summer drink), and even a Mimosa Flight which includes any three mimosas of choice for only $23.

When it comes to Arizona brunch destinations that bring a lot to the table (both literally and figuratively), I’ve visited few that do it quite as well as SugarJam.
